Hi - Is the gap year program at Hebrew U less of a 'gap year' than the XP program at Bar Ilan? Is it all academics with no fun or trips? I've been in touch with the team at Rothberg and it seems there are plenty of activities but MASA seem to think it's not a proper gap year, where you learn, volunteer and see the country. I'm after something a little more academic so Hebrew U appeals to me but I'd love to get another perspective, and reassurance that this is a gap year program and not just a freshman year. Thank you

Gap Year and Freshman Year in Israel
Hello Jane,
As far as I know, The Hebrew University Rothberg School’s gap year program is defined as a “first-year” study abroad program which includes around 13-16 credits, with introductory courses in Jewish studies, Middle East studies, and Israel studies. This program does, however, also include social activities such as field trips, festivals, and other activities at HUJI campus. Students also volunteer in the community at a placement of their choice several times a week.
Bar Ilan XP program is a gap year track which incorporates general studies, Jewish studies in a Midrasha or Beit Midrash, Hebrew studies (Ulpan), and extensive social activities such as tours and weekends.
It should be noted that in both HUJI and BIU, credits earned are transferrable and recognized by most universities and colleges in the US and other countries.
Only you can truly know which program is right for you, so I would advise you to also contact both academic institutions to inquire more about the social life and academic requirements, to find the track which most aligns with your goals. I have also attached a link below my answer to an article with more information about gap year programs in Israel.
